The star has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was presented with the award on 16 October as his latest record the album was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

These funds supported locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to challenges arising from water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in improving amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that money from concerts in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is far from the only musician to contribute his honor funds to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp received the trophy in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, frontman the singer announced that the band would donate their prize money to the organization War Child.

In 2002, artist she shared her award between several charities, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," the artist told outlets.

In recent years, the band contributed their winnings to the community center that supported their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally 1994 winners the group donated their prize to a charity for MS after a friend was found to have the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," stated vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success affected another person's life."

Last week, the trust shared it had saved several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the other in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by a national body and supporters who buy "shares" in the buildings.
